Apex another working title for Godzilla vs. Kong, is an American science fiction monster picture set for release in 2021, after Legendary Pictures' Godzilla: King of Monsters in 2019 and serving as a prequel to both King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island.

Godzilla vs. Kong has eventually been released after being delayed from May 29, 2020 to March 13, 2020, November 20, 2020, and ultimately May 21, 2021. It will be released in the United States on March 31, 2021. The film was also accessible on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.

Adam Wingard directed the picture, which was co-produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers. Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein wrote the script, which was based on a narrative by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. King of Monsters was also written by Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields. Godzilla vs. Kong takes place five years after King of the Monsters and pits Godzilla and Kong against one another in the aftermath of Ghidorah's rampage.

The film is being developed into a sequel.

Godzilla vs. Kong is a movie about two mythical monsters fighting each other. The fate of the world is at stake. They set off on a dangerous journey to find Kong's true home. Jia, a young orphaned girl with whom he has formed a unique and powerful bond, is with them. Then, out of nowhere, they find themselves in the path of Godzilla, who is on the verge of going on a rampage across the world. Unknown forces are to blame for causing the titans to fight in an epic battle. This is only the beginning of the mystery that lies deep inside the Earth.

Meanwhile, Bernie Hayes, an Apex Cybernetics employee and presenter of the Titan Truth Podcast, exfiltrates material implying dark operations at a Pensacola Apex facility, but Godzilla appears and suddenly strikes. Among the rubble of the facility, Bernie discovers a bizarre piece of equipment like a huge robotic eye.

Following the assault, popular opinion has shifted against Godzilla, who is no longer seen as humanity's savior. Madison Russell, now an adult and a follower of Bernie's podcast, is concerned when she hears about Godzilla's latest assault at her school. After school, she attempts in vain to persuade her widowed father Mark (who is serving as Monarch's director) that she has a probable clue on the source of Godzilla's rampage, but he ignores everything she says, stating merely that beasts, like humans, may evolve. Later, Madison enlists the aid of her closest friend Josh Valentine to track down the person responsible for Godzilla's rampage and uncover Apex's secrets.

Meanwhile, Apex's founder and CEO Walter Simmons engages Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist, to assist them in their quest for a tremendous energy source in the Hollow Earth, a subterranean planet under the Earth and the secret home of the Titans. Nathan is first cautious since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth and was killed by a powerful anti-gravity field within the tube. He ultimately accepts when Walter unveils Apex's development of Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, customized ship capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.

Nathan travels to Skull Island, where he meets his colleague, Monarch anthropological linguist and Jia's adoptive mother Ilene Andrews. Nathan proposes that they use Kong as their navigator to guide them to the Hollow Earth, as Skull Island is no longer able to contain him (because Kong has grown too large) and allow him to survive. Ilene Andrews agrees, and the two of them set out to find the energy source. Though Ilene initially refuses, explaining that Godzilla would come for Kong as soon as he was moved off of Skull Island, she eventually agrees after being persuaded by Nathan that they must undertake this mission in order to halt Godzilla's rampage and that they can also find Kong a new home on the mainland.

It is at this moment that Jia detects Godzilla's approach by sensing vibrations through the ship, as the Titan comes and battles the soldiers before capitulating and almost drowning Kong and the others on board. The gang is saved from drowning thanks to Nathan's successful release of Kong by unlocking his shackles. This allows him to combat Godzilla underwater for long enough for Godzilla to swim to the surface and turn the barge back on its side, freeing the party from their chains. Kong gets onboard a neighboring aircraft carrier in order to meet Godzilla, who also climbs aboard to confront Kong. The two Titans trade vicious punches until fighter aircraft divert Godzilla's attention long enough for Kong to shove him back into the sea. In order to avoid the explosion, Godzilla shoots his atomic breath from under the carrier, but Kong manages to get off in time, only for Godzilla to wrap his tail around Kong and take him into the depths of the ocean, where he intends to drown the Titan.

Meanwhile, Madison and Josh track down Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and joins their inquiry, believing Apex is to blame for Godzilla's altered behavior. They slip inside the devastated Apex headquarters together, only to discover that Bernie's "eye" is no longer there. When they accidentally imprison themselves in an antigravity transport truck delivering Skullcrawler eggs down an underground tube to Hong Kong, they find a mysterious facility deep beneath.

There, the three disembark and discover Apex's ultimate weapon "Mechagodzilla" a mechanized counterpart of Godzilla being controlled by the late Dr. Ishiro Serizawa's son and Walter's chief technology officer Ren Serizawa. To put Mechagodzilla's strength to the test against the Titans, Walter summons a huge adult Skullcrawler designated "Number 10" into the room as soon as the mecha is ignited. The beast is on the point of attacking Madison, Josh, and Bernie when it is captured and detained by Mechagodzilla, who cleaves the Skullcrawler in two with a tremendous red energy beam, enabling Madison, Josh, and Bernie to take refuge in a tiny hatch. However, the test is cut short as the mecha instantly turns down owing to power supply limits.

Walter intends to defeat Mechagodzilla using the energies of the Hollow Earth. Apex is assaulting Godzilla because he and the Titans are being replaced by humans. Ren has been sitting inside Ghidorah's severed head since Apex got it from Alan Jonah five years ago, operating Mechagodzilla through radio waves.

Kong and Nathan's crew discover an ecology that is identical to that of Skull Island within the Hollow Earth. They are assaulted by a pair of Warbats while traversing the countryside, with one of the Warbats destroying one of the HEAVs in the process. Kong was able to rescue the party by killing the first Warbat and swinging its carcass onto the second Warbat, knocking it out cold. However, the beast recovers and constricts itself around Kong, saving him from certain death. In order for the Warbat to suffocate Kong, the creature is hit by missiles fired by Nathan's squad from their HEAV, allowing Kong to break free and savagely thrash the monster to death before feeding on the Warbat's corpse by consuming its intestines.

Following that, Kong and Nathan's squad begin their quest, finally arriving at a massive stone temple that was previously home to Kong's forefathers. They discover remnants of an old fight between Kong's and Godzilla's races within, while Kong discovers an ancient axe crafted from a dead member of Godzilla's race's dorsal plate before sitting on a massive throne. As Nathan's crew discovers the power source necessary to supplement Mechagodzilla's energy supply, Kong discovers that the same source may also replenish the axe. Maia and the Apex crew, on the other hand, harvest the power source and return it to their Hong Kong headquarters, despite Ilene's protests that Apex cannot just steal the millennium's greatest discovery. Maia directs her guards to fire their weapons at Nathan's crew, prompting Kong to fiercely yell at them in response. Meanwhile, Mechagodzilla starts transmitting a signal to Godzilla, who becomes aware of the machine's activation and makes a beeline for Hong Kong.

Both Kong and Godzilla recuperate and rise to their feet, with Godzilla on the hunt for Kong, who hides from the Titan by perching himself atop a tower. Kong throws a construction crane into a building, distracting Godzilla to the point where he ambushes him from above and places the Titan in a chokehold with the intent of strangling him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury on Kong, eventually dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. With Kong restrained and held down, Godzilla roars fiercely at his opponent in a display of power, while Kong, beaten, roars passionately in defiance against Godzilla.

Walter instructs Ren to send Mechagodzilla back to Apex headquarters to kill Godzilla. Despite Ren's cautions not to utilize the new Hollow Earth energy source without first testing it, the mecha is activated and begins its mission. Bernie, Madison, and Josh are also brought to Walter by the security officers. Madison accuses Walter of taking responsibility for allowing mankind to fight Godzilla and the Titans, despite Walter's denials.

While Josh and Bernie attempt in vain to remotely deactivate the rampaging robot and Madison summons Mark for assistance, Godzilla and Mechagodzilla battle, at one point both firing their energy beams at each other that lock together, only for Mechagodzilla to gain the upper hand, knocking Godzilla over and burning him. While Mechagodzilla proceeds to overrun and humiliate Godzilla, Nathan, Ilene, and Jia approach an unconscious Kong, who Jia notices has a slower pulse. Ilene explains that they are unable to generate a charge large enough to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan, recalling Maia's earlier statement about the HEAVs producing a charge large enough to power Las Vegas for a week, flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and unleashing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

Kong jumps atop Mechagodzilla just as the robot is about to fire its red energy beam into Godzilla's neck, deflecting the beam into the air and sparing Godzilla's life. Godzilla aids Kong in his struggle against Mechagodzilla after realizing Kong saved his life and sense an ally in him after discovering he is not an opponent.

Seeing Kong holding his axe, Godzilla supercharges it by blasting the weapon with his atomic breath, allowing Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla limb from limb and ripping its head off before holding up his trophy with a mighty roar of triumph and sitting down to rest.

Monarch subsequently established an observation station in the Hollow Earth. Ilene, Nathan, and Jia observe Kong on his morning stroll one day. Kong jumps atop a cliff, pounds his chest, and roars, proclaiming himself king of the Hollow Earth and joyfully accepting it as his new home and dominion.

The scene where Kong smashes his right shoulder (having been dislocated earlier) against a building to relocate it could be a reference to Martin Riggs’s infamous ability of a similar nature in the Lethal Weapon franchise.

The film includes several references to NGE, including the following:

It is comparable to a sequence in which Eva Unit-02 hops from ship to ship while attempting to dodge an angel, which takes place in the same film as Godzilla's jump from ship to ship.
